7:10 AM	Strings all the way down \| Presented by Adam Evans, Canva	Search teams usually build language models (NLP) in notebooks against data in S3, then drag them through data warehouses and into production later. We do the opposite, and it's faster! This talk walks through how Canva trains lightning-fast query and token classifiers for template and image search with Snowflake at the core. The recipe: a golden benchmark hand-crafted with a frontier model, a prompt iterated against a VALUES(...) table inside Cortex, a finetuned BERT-style student. A staff backend engineer with no ML background trained our latest salient-phrase detector this way in under a week. We'll walk through the process, look at some fun examples, and discuss how the string-to-string framework generalises to any NLP problem.
